Aw, black with the tan top is a beautiful color combo (you had to though, I get it). Nice little breakdown of what you did to the car, I enjoy reading these sorts of posts. Thanks for putting a clean NA back on the road!

I’ve seen some cars where I actually really like black and tan...the Miata I actually prefer a black top though. Thanks for the feedback! I used to love reading the ‘Art of the Flip’ posts but haven’t seen any lately, so I thought I’d share.

Nice flip! I do have a few thoughts:

Did you know you flipped a semi-rare C Package car ? (Roughly 4k to 6k built.) I noticed the Nardi furniture, tan top, and fancy metal sill plates. Too bad you couldn’t track down the 14" BBS wheels and a tan top, you might have been able to get an extra grand out of it!

I still don’t dig style bars, wrecks like these make me think they’ll do more harm than good in a roll. That said, they blend in a lot better painted flat black instead of sticking out in chrome.

The NB1 seats (look like NB1 since NB2 have taller headrests) are a good upgrade for NA; they’re a lot more comfortable, supportive, and have useful headrests compared to older seats (minus the ‘95 M Edition and it’s adjustable headrests). Not as good as the NB2 but an improvement over the NAs.

Great article! I look forward to your next one.

I did look into the VIN and it wasn’t anything too special. The sill plates and Nardi shift knob did interest me though.

Totally hate them. I have another Miata (that I keep) that has a true roll bar. I’ve actually broken a style bar off by hand before!

I was pleasantly surprised by how much better the seats were than an NA. They were the only ones around on my local Craigslist and I was lucky they matched.

Wish I would have documented some past ones better! I’m sure I’ll have a few to share in the near future though.

C-package wasn’t a special edition per say, but it was a kind of special car. Aside from the the 95 M-edition, it was the only way to get a tan & leather interior. C-package was simply the highest non special edition trim. Comes with all the bells and whistles, including an LSD. Like daender said, the 92 C came with BBS wheels. I have a red 93 C (yes, it still comes with a tan interior/top) but it came with daisies, although I got a set of those BBS and put them on anyway :)

Gotcha. Well, no LSD so unless that and the BBS wheels were stolen by a previous owner, it doesn’t sound like a C-package car. Would have been cool to happen across something a bit rare!

There’s actually a chance the LSD was optional, I may just be disillusioned because mine has one. And since you started with aftermarket wheels, it totally could have started with the BBS. Anyway, my point is that unless somebody did a full C-package interior and top swap, it’s a natural C-package.

I love reading these, please keep sharing them. I do have a question, so you absorb the registration and insurance costs because you use the car while you have it? In NJ insurance is insanely expensive, bare bones coverage is still a ton and I have a clean history. If I kept the car for 3 months I would have to account for that.

Yes, I will absorb that cost if it is less than my normal daily driver. In Michigan, we have insane insurance costs as well due to no fault insurance...and Detroit. What is cool is that we are allowed to switch our license plate from one vehicle to another without paying the annual registration cost over again.

I’d be interested in hearing more about your buying and selling experiences in general. Would you be willing to write about that? I’m sure you’ve got some entertaining Craigslist stories!

I just have to say that I love a tan interior in a black roadster. Reminds me of a dress shoe.

Kinja'd!!!

Although the tan top would have been fine, too.

Haha! Never thought about it that way. I really liked the tan interior, but the tan top didn’t really do it for me.

I very much like the switch to the black top, the tan tops just stand out too much for me. You made out much better than I did on my Miata flip but I am not complaining. I made about $500 on a car I got to enjoy for an entire year!
